In 1989 Pepsi and Coca-Cola, two very big competitors in the Soda industry began to get popular Musicians to allow them to play their music on their commercials. They'd also have the artists themselves be on the commercials. This was all an attempt to appeal to the young adults in America by saying: "Hey, your favorite singer likes Pepsi, so you should too!"
