University Of Mississippi

University of Mississippi, or Ole Miss, was the first college to be integrated with white and black students. The first black student to attend this college was named James Meredith. It was a very difficult thing to do. The governor of Mississippi, tried to stop the desegregation by blocking the door and saying he would not allow Meredith to enroll. With every attempt to enroll James Meredith in the college the tension grew, and the pro-segregationists grew more violent. Finally, President John F. Kennedy resorted to using martial law, when a riot broke out. On October 2nd, 1962, James Meredith was finally allowed to enroll.
